Adding Desktop Recycle Bin in Windows

NOTE: The Desktop Recycle Bin is removed on purpose. This is intended to prevent users from using the Recycle Bin as a file directory for storage. Consider this when choosing to add this back to your system.

WARNING: The following steps involve editing the Windows Registry. Only experienced administrators should edit the registry. Incorrect edits can cause drastic changes in the operating system or the OS may fail to work altogether if the wrong keys are changed. Before you edit the registry you should export a copy of the key(s) you plan to change so that this can be restored if problems are encountered.

Windows 11 / 10

  1. Within the Registry Editor (regedit), use the navigation tree to reach the following location:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\NonEnum

2. Look for a REG_DWORD key, named
    {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}

If this value doesn’t exist, you will need to create it.

3. To create the key, right-click in the window, select New, then DWORD (32-bit) Value.

4. In the Name field, enter:
    {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}

5. After entering the name, double-click the new key and ensure the Base is set to Hexadecimal and the Value data field is 0, before clicking OK.

6. The Recycle Bin should now appear on the Desktop. If it does not, you may need to log out and back into Windows on this system.

7. Toggling the display of the Recycle Bin after this is simple. Right-Click the desktop and select Personalize.

8. Select Themes from the menu options.

9. Find and click on Desktop icon settings.

10. The resulting dialog that appears permits you to check or uncheck the display of the Recycle Bin from the Desktop. Take care in deciding which options your users should have access to on your ExacqVision NVR.

Recording Not Possible – Windows DST Issue

Description

If the exacqVision Server data drives are full and are displaying “Recording Not Possible” on the storage page then it is possible an invalid hour folder was created during the switch to Daylight Savings Times (DST). Use the following instructions to verify and resolve the issue.

Product

  • exacqVision Server

Solution

These instruction are based on Windows OS and North America DST.

  • Check DST Rules for your area here.
  • Make note of the Date and Time of the change to DST and determine if an invalid folder exist.
  • For this example most of North America changed to DST on March 12th, 2023 at 02:00 AM
  • Therefore any .ps or .psi files stored in the folder D:\2023\03\12\02 are in the wrong folder.
  • The folder either needs to be removed or the files need to be moved to D:\2023\03\12\03
  • Note: D: is the disk letter which will vary across systems with more than one disk.
    i.e. – E:\2023\03\12, F:\2023\03\12, etc.

Use File Explorer to Edit Directory

  • Log into the Exacq server OS using your Admin credentials
  • Open “File Explorer”
  • When File Explorer opens navigate to data drive
    D: > 2023 > 03 > 12
  • NOTE: If your system has more than 1 data drive, you will also need to look in each mount point/disk letter and repeat this process listed below.
    i.e. – look in E: > 2023 > 03 > 12, F: > 2023 > 03 > 12, etc.
  • If you find a folder named “02” within
D:\2023\03\12 you will need to copy the contents to
D:\2023\03\12\03 then delete this 02 folder.
  • Repeat this process for all data drives attached. Optionally, you can delete this 02 folder altogether, but only with permission from the system administrator.
  • Restart the ExacqVision server service from the services.msc console:

Note:
Depending on the amount of data retention the system has it may be necessary to go back to previous years to make the same edits for Daylight Savings Time changes.

In Example:
DST change was March 13th in 2022. You would find the 03/13/2022 directory, and make the same edits removing the 02 hour folder or moving the contents of the 02 hour folder to the 03 folder in this directory.

System Unexpectedly Reboots Into Recovery Mode Then Enters Factory Restore

Issue

When system reboots and boots up to recovery mode it selects “Factory Capture” by default leading the system to commit a full factory restore upon pressing “enter”.

Solution

Windows

  1. Open CMD, using Run as Administrator
  2. Enter mountvol z: /s
  3. Enter z:
  4. Enter dir
  5. Enter cd EFI/BOOT
  6. Enter notepad refind.conf
  7. Search for the default_selection entry
  1. Set the parameter to “1” instead of “factory restore”
  1. Save your changes and reboot the NVR
Linux System

The file at ‘/boot/efi/EFI/BOOT/refind.conf’ will need to be edited in the same way it is for the Windows instructions. Instead we would follow these steps:

  1. Open Terminal (CTRL+ALT+T)
  2. Enter sudo -i
  3. Enter caja (this should open a file explorer type window)
  4. Navigate to /boot/efi/EFI/BOOT/refind.conf
  5. Right-click and open file a text editor
  6. Edit the text as shown in Step 6 of the Windows instructions above.
  7. Save your changes, close the file, and restart the system

exacqVision sysprep Error “Failed to Write Model number”

Title

exacqVision sysprep Error “Failed to Write Model number”

Description

During a full re-image of an exacqVision Server, while doing the sysprep, an error occurred “failed to write the model number” (see Figure 1)

Product

exacqVision Server

Solution

It was discovered that the integrator was using the wrong iso file for the unit. In this case the NVR shipped with Windows Embedded and the integrator was re-imaging with a Windows 10 iso.

Resolution:

  • The integrator should re-image using the correct iso file for the unit, in this case WES7.
  • Alternatively they can see check to see if the unit can be upgraded to Windows 10 at https://exacq.com/upgrades/win10/ and if so purchase the upgrade kit.

How multiple adapters on the same network are expected to behave

Summary

If you configure a Windows-based computer that has more than one network adapter on the same physical network and protocol subnet, you may experience unexpected results. This article describes the expected behavior of this kind of nonstandard configuration.

More Information

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have a working computer that has Windows installed.
  • Two network adapters are connected to the same physical network or hub.
  • TCP/IP is installed as the network protocol.
  • The adapter addresses on the same subnet are 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2.
  • A client on the network uses the address 192.168.0.119.

In this scenario, you may expect the two adapters on the same physical network and protocol subnet to perform load balancing. However, by definition, only one adapter may communicate on the network at a time in the Ethernet network topology. Therefore, both adapters cannot be transmitting at the same time and must wait if another device on the network is transmitting. Additionally, broadcast messages must be handled by each adapter because both are listening on the same network. This configuration requires significant overhead, excluding any protocol-related issues. This configuration does not offer a good method for providing a redundant network adapter for the same network.

Note Windows Server 2012 includes a new feature call SMB Multichannel. SMB Multichannel is part of the SMB 3.0 protocol and lets servers use multiple network connections at the same time. For more information about SMB Multichannel, visit The basics of SMB Multichannel, a feature of Windows Server 2012 and SMB 3.0.

Note Windows Server 2012 servers cannot use multiple network connections at the same time if the network is configured by using CSMA/CD.

Assume that the server has to send a packet by using the TCP/IP protocol to a client whose address is 192.168.0.119. This address is located on the local subnet. Therefore, a gateway does not have to be used to reach the client. The protocol stack uses the first route that it finds in the local routing table. Typically, this is the first adapter that was installed. In this case, that adapter is 192.168.0.1. If the transmission fails, later retries may use the same adapter according to the entry that is found in the routing table.

If the network cable for the 192.168.0.1 adapter fails, this does not necessarily cause the route to be removed from the routing table. Therefore, the second adapter still may not be used.

Another thing to consider is that some network applications bind to specific adapters in the system. If a network application were to bind to the second adapter specifically, application-related traffic that was received from clients on the first adapter might be ignored by the application. This might be caused by NetBIOS name registration on the network. Additionally, if the adapter to which the application is bound fails, the application may fail if it does not use the other adapter.

Usually, unless applications specifically demand it, this kind of configuration is not helpful. Some manufacturers make fault-tolerant network adapters to guard against a single point of failure. These adapters enable two adapters to be included on the same server but enable only one adapter to be used at a time. If the primary adapter fails, the driver deactivates the first card and enables the second by using the same address configuration. The result is a fairly seamless transition to the alternative adapter. This is the preferred method to guard against a single network adapter as a single point of failure.

High CPU utilization for large ESM deploys on server 2008 in windows

Description

On a customer site, we have seen high CPU utilization in the 85% or more range with multiple cores (more than 20 cores). ESM will spin up a sub importer per core, so there could be 20+ sub importers in this scenario. Each using CPU, the total can be very high. On newer windows operating systems, this seems to balance correctly and not using high CPU.

If a customer is seeing this, you can configure the ESM importer to spin up a lower number of sub importers. By setting the _ESM_NUM_IMPORTERS=X where X is the number you want to use, in system environment variables, you can limit the number it spins up. Thus reducing the CPU load.
