Impact of Microsoft Windows XP End of Support

Microsoft announced the end of support for Windows XP on April 8, 2014. The operating system will no longer receive security updates or technical support after that date.

Customers with exacqVision servers running Windows XP will likely have questions about this end of support, and the following information will help answer their questions:

Q: Will Exacq upgrade the operating system on Windows XP-based exacqVision systems?

A: Because of the age of the motherboards and capture cards in early exacqVision servers running Windows XP, it is not possible to upgrade servers to a current operating system.

Q: Will Exacq continue to support Windows XP-based exacqVision systems?

A: Yes. exacqVision features introduced before the Windows XP End of Support will continue to be supported on Windows XP-based systems. However, new features introduced after April 8, 2014 might not be compatible with Windows XP.

Q: Will exacqVision systems running XP be vulnerable to security risks?

A: Because of the lack of new security updates from Microsoft, any system running Windows XP will be at increased risk from viruses, spyware, and other malicious software.

Q: What are my options?

A: Customers can continue to operate Windows XP-based exacqVision systems at their own risk, but they should consider upgrading their systems in the near future.

exacqVision Windows XP Support

Microsoft has informed consumers that Windows XP is no longer supported as of April 8, 2014. This means that Microsoft no longer supplies security updates for Windows XP. Note the following information about how this affects exacqVision products.

Can I upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7 on my Exacq-built exacqVision system?

Any system built by Exacq with Windows XP installed contains hardware that is more than three years old. This means that much of the hardware does not have proper drivers for use with Windows 7. Therefore, it is not recommended that you upgrade those systems from Windows XP. Exacq explicitly will not support such upgraded systems; if you try to perform the upgrade on your own, you will be responsible for ensuring that the operating system and drivers are properly installed and running on the system.

Will Exacq software still continue to function correctly if I do not upgrade the operating system?

exacqVision features will continue to function as they do currently. However, it is possible that some new features introduced may not be compatible with Windows XP.

Assigning a Default Printer to the Windows User (Restricted) Account

  2. Log in to the Windows Admin account.
  3. From the Start menu, select Programs, Accessories, and Notepad.
  4. Type the following, where “Printer Name” is the name of the desired default printer (such as “Lexmark 2310”).
