exacqVision Compatibility with 4K Resolution Monitors

Many large modern monitors and televisions have a horizontal resolution of 4,000 (4K) pixels. When using certain interfaces to display video, 4K resolution is either unsupported, or it can be displayed only at a refresh rate of only 30 Hz, resulting in choppy video. However, 4K resolution can be displayed at 60 Hz over interfaces such as DisplayPort 1.2.

exacqVision system support for 4K monitors varies by model and release versions:

Support for 4K Resolution Through DisplayPort 1.2 Interface

  1. exacqVision A-Series version xx and later
  2. exacqVision Z-Series version xx and later

<br>

4K Resolution Restricted or Not Supported

  1. exacqVision LC
  2. exacqVision ELP
  3. exacqVision A-Series versions before xx*
  4. exacqVision Z-Series versions before xx*

<br>

*These systems can support 4K resolution only at 30 Hz, resulting in choppy video and increased demand on the system’s processor.

DVI Output not Available on 4U/RAID exacqVision A-Series Systems

The DVI output on exacqVision systems with RAID controller cards might be deactivated on systems manufactured before 2011. This applied to all 4U and RAID exacqVision A-Series systems manufactured during that period. For those systems, you must use the VGA output when connecting a monitor.

How to Find the Serial Number of an exacqVision System

Using the Client

Within the exacqVision Desktop Client application, click the Configuration (gear) icon from the top-left toolbar.

Click on the ‘Systems’ node from the top of the left-hand side navigation tree.

The grid displayed lists all systems added to this client. Find the ‘Serial Number’ column here.

NOTE: Systems that are software only installs on third-party hardware will display the licensed MAC address as the Serial Number.

<br>

Hardware Labels

Depending on the chassis style and age of the system, the location of the Serial Number label will vary.

This may be found on the side of the server chassis, the rear of the chassis, or in some cases inside the front cover/door.

exacqVision and Heartbleed

In April 2014 a Security Advisory was issued by the OpenSSL project notifying the public of a serious vulnerability in the encryption software used by a large number of companies. (For detailed information, visit http://heartbleed.com/.) Exacq Technologies took immediate action to assess how this affects its products.

<br>

exacqVision uses OpenSSL for a few functions, but the version affected is used only in a small number of exacqVision products:

<br>

exacqVision Server and Client 6.0 for Window

OpenSSL 1.0.1e is used in exacqVision 6.0, released in March 2014. However, the use of this product is not subject to the Heartbleed vulnerability. You can optionally upgrade to the latest version that includes updated OpenSSL at https://exacq.com/support/downloads.php.

<br>

exacqVision S-Series

exaqVision S-Series systems use Ubuntu 12.04, which includes the affected version of OpenSSL. However, only specific non-default configurations expose the system to the Heartbleed vulnerability. See https://exacq.com/kb/?crc=61212 details.

Arecont Camera Video Loss with Large Frame Sizes

Issue

Some cameras are capable of creating large frame sizes. There are two issues that can be encountered by unreasonably large frame sizes.

As frame size increases the likelihood of the exacqVision recorder throttling increases.

A frame size > 4MB will cause exacqVision to display “Acquiring Video” message instead of the actual video stream. This has been known to be an issue with certain Arecont Cameras which are capable of producing large frame sizes.

<br>

Resolution

To reduce frame sizes:

  1. Use H.264 encoding
  2. Reduce the image quality level
  3. Ensure lighting is adequate, (natural or IR)
  4. For Arecont Cameras check the following settings:
    • Increase the low-light noise filter from the default (50) to the maximum (100). This setting can be changed on the Image tab for a single-sensor camera, or the Settings window for panoramics. (http://{IPADDRESS}/set?spacialfilter=100 works for both types)
    • Change the exposure mode from the default (Balanced) to Quality. This setting can be changed in the same location as the low-light noise filter. (http://{IPADDRESS}/set?lowlight=quality for single-sensor cameras, or http://{IPADDRESS}/set{n}?lowlight=quality, where “{n}” is a setting from 1-4, for panoramics)
    • Turn on binning mode in night mode. This setting can be changed on the Image tab for a single-sensor camera, or the Settings window for panoramics.

Validating ExacqVision Video (also known as Watermarking or Authentication)

The validation standard used in ExacqVision is known as HMAC, for Hashed Message Authentication Code, and uses a cryptographic hash and secret cryptographic key. HMAC is used by ExacqVision to verify the integrity of exported video.

The ExacqVision Client software calculates and writes out the message authentication code (MAC) during file export. The ExacqVision ePlayer later calculates a hash and verifies the MAC during authentication using SHA-256. The methodology ensures no alteration of the data as the hashed calculations are compared to be certain the hashes match.

To authenticate video in the ExacqVision ePlayer, select Authenticate from the Tools menu.

The following image shows a successful authentication:

Video may only be authenticated using the ExacqVision ePlayer. The ePlayer application is used to playback ExacqVision native files in .PS or .PSX file formats. It is also packaged in self-playing .EXE file exports. For more information on the features of exported file formats, refer to Article 1894.
