Video Codecs vs Video Containers

Codecs

Codec is a term that combines compression and decompression. Transmitting video streams or storing video files in a compressed format to save bandwidth and storage capacity requires one algorithm to compress the video and another to decompress it at the system receiving the stream or playing the file.

Containers

Containers are just that, a container sort of like a shipping box, that holds all the pieces of your file together so that when you want to play back a file, everything needed is there. An example might be including subtitles or metadata with your video. Some container types are capable of this while others are not, which may influence the type you choose. This is illustrated in the article ExacqVision Export Video File Types

Audio Troubleshooting

Some cameras have audio inputs, which is not the same as having a built in microphone.

Sometimes you may also have to do a combination of tasks to get the audio to work correctly in Exacq.

External Microphones

  • Is audio scheduled to record
  • Is audio supported on the device?
  • Is audio enabled in the cameras Web GUI?
  • Are the Audio Inputs/Outputs enabled in the client?
  • Is the gain/sensitivity set either to high or low?
  • Is the stream profile setup correctly to allow Audio?
  • Is the recording format correct (JPEG, H.264, H.265)? *
  • Is the Codec supported (G.711, ACC)? *
  • Have you checked the exacqVision Server logs?
  • Has the cameras firmware version been tested? *
  • Do they need an Audio Bridge?
  • Is a powered microphone connected?
  • Is it connected to correct inputs?
  • Is the polarity correct?
  • Have you defaulted the device?

* Check the camera integration page

Samsung server log error “Device did not return codec information for profile”

Issue seen with SNO-8081R/SNV-8081R

<br>

This is caused by the camera reporting codec of h.265 profile that we do not currently support with our Samsung plugin. This does not affect other profiles. The message can be ignored.
