Adding an Authorized Public SSH Key to a C2C

Description

SSH access to Cloudvue C2C devices depends on RSA public/private key pairs. Public keys for L3 Cloudvue support were added into the Cloudvue production software with the release of 22.9.0 in January of 2023. The following instructions can be used to temporarily add a public ssh key to a C2C device. SSH public keys added in this fashion will not survive a normal Cloudvue software update.

Product

  • Cloudvue C2C

Solution

Prerequisites

  • If one does not already exist you will need to generate an ssh key pair, see Knowledge Base Article #13051 “Cloudvue SSH Tunneling” for details
  • A copy of your public key, the contents of (~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub)

Find a Buddy

You will need to get the assistance of someone who already has ssh access to the camera to SSH into the camera and make the necessary changes

Extract Cloudvue Software

Run the following command on the C2C to extract the contents of the Cloudvue software tarball into a temporary folder for editing:

mkdir -p /tmp/tBall && tar -xf smartvue.tar.gz -C /tmp/tBall

Add Public Key

Edit the authorized_keys file and add the new public key using vi

NOTE: vi is the only text editor available

vi /tmp/tBall/home/smartvue/.ssh/authorized_keys
  • Each authorized users will be listed along with their public ssh-rsa key (see example)
  • Insert your information at the bottom of this file beginning with a comment “#” and your name then followed by a line with your public key
  • How you paste will depend on the program you are using to SSH. In PuTTY it’s just right clicking on the window, in other terminals you may need to right-click and then choose paste in the menu that pops up.
  • vi commands
    • G – Uppercase letter “G” goes to the bottom of the file
    • o – lowercase letter “o” inserts a line below the current line and goes into editing mode
    • ⏎ – Enter key creates a new line below the current one (just putting this here to be thorough)
    • ␛ – Escape key exits “insert mode” in vi
    • :wq⏎ – colon opens up a prompt to type a command, the w stands for “write” and will save the changes, the q stands for “quit” and will exit vi, Enter key runs the command
    • q!⏎ – If you ever need to quit without saving, leave out the w and add an ! after the q (that tells it to force quit ignoring any changes), Enter key runs the command

Recreate Tarball

Use the following command to recreate the cloudvue software tarball and cleanup temporary files

cd /tmp/tBall && tar -czf ~/smartvue.tar.gz * && cd ~ && rm -rf /tmp/tBall

Install the Cloudvue Software

This will apply the new changes. A reboot is not necessary since we aren’t modifying any running services

tar -xf ~/smartvue.tar.gz -C /

What is H.264 / H.265?

H.264 and H.265

H.264 (MPEG-4 AVC) and H.265 (MPEG-4 HEVC) are MPEG video standards. H.265 is the newer of these standards.

What is Motion JPEG?

Motion JPEG is a compression format that is older than H.264/H.265 and was created as a version of the still image JPEG format for video use. It is often shortened to just JPEG in video applications.

Why choose H.264/H.265 over Motion JPEG?

Motion JPEG ignores frame-to-frame data redundancy. When using Motion JPEG, each video frame is compressed using JPEG. The Motion JPEG video stream is then presented by displaying each frame in order.

H.264/H.265 improved upon this by using compression algorithms that compare frame-to-frame data to help eliminate the transmission of redundant data.

Both provide video compression far greater than Motion JPEG without sacrificing image quality.

Greater compression means big savings in terms of your network’s bandwidth consumption and the amount of space required to store recorded video on an NVR over Motion JPEG. Decreasing the amount of storage space needed will lead to longer retention times without increasing storage capacity. This aspect is even more important when considering use cases that require high numbers of cameras, high frame rates, and long retention times.

The following graph shows a comparison of three identical model 2MP cameras set to 15 frames per second, running the same firmware version. However, each camera is set to a different recording format. The camera set to Motion JPEG is shown at the top, in red. Below, the H.264 stream is shown in blue, and the H.265 stream just under that in green. The changes in data correspond with a person walking through the scene.

ExacqVision records files in 5 minute increments. Examining the files created from these 2MP cameras recording continuously for 5 minutes and then extrapolating their file sizes over the course of 24 hours, and 1 year, the amount of storage space saved is considerable.

5 minutes (KB)24 hours (GB)1 year (TB)
Motion JPEG705,453203.1774.2
H.26432,1329.253.4
H.26521,9666.32.3

How does H.264 work?

As mentioned Motion JPEG compresses each frame individually and all frames are essentially equal. H.264 and provides for multiple types of frames.

  • I-frames are somewhat similar to a Motion JPEG frame. An I-frame contains all the data needed and can be decoded without reference to any other frames. H.264 always begins with an I-frame, and you’ll learn why in a moment. These I-frames occur at regular intervals in the video. A camera’s GOV, or GOP, rate sets the distance between each I-frame.

• P-frames lie between the I-frames. P-frames reference the previous I-frames and are smaller because they only include the regions which have changed. This provides a huge benefit over Motion JPEG because you are not retransmitting data that hasn’t changed.

Imagine a scene in which a building is in the background and a person enters the field of view. The camera is not moving, nor is the building, so the pixels making up the part of the image where the building stands do not need to be sent again. Instead, only those pixels representing the person that entered the scene are sent and these replace the pixels in the image displayed to you.

• B-frames are not provided by all applications or video devices. B-frames occur in between I-frames and P-frames, or between multiple P-frames. B-frames are predictive in nature. They refer not only to previous frames but to future frames as well. For this reason implementing B-frames is not always used in live video applications since there is a slight delay introduced due to the need to wait for additional frames to arrive before the B-frame can be created. When only I-frames and P-frames are used, it is referred to as an H.264 baseline stream.

H.264 compression is performed by processing and compressing the frames in regularly sized ‘macroblocks’ of 4 to 16 pixels, which are further broken down into smaller blocks for compression. The main takeaway is that the image frame is divided up in very regularly sizes areas.

How does H.265 work?

H.265 includes the same types of frames as mentioned above, but it improves over H.264 by providing the ability to dynamically size the regions the frame is broken up into. Rather than the macroblocks, transform blocks, and prediction blocks of H.264, these dynamically sized areas are named Coding Tree Units (CTUs). This usually translates into more efficient compression than H.264 because the frame can be compressed more heavily in some areas than others when needed.

Illustrated below, H.264 on the left breaks up the image into equal blocks for compression. Whereas, on the right, H.265 divides the image into dynamically sized regions to better compress those regions based on what is in them.

Video Codecs vs Video Containers

Codecs

Codec is a term that combines compression and decompression. Transmitting video streams or storing video files in a compressed format to save bandwidth and storage capacity requires one algorithm to compress the video and another to decompress it at the system receiving the stream or playing the file.

Containers

Containers are just that, a container sort of like a shipping box, that holds all the pieces of your file together so that when you want to play back a file, everything needed is there. An example might be including subtitles or metadata with your video. Some container types are capable of this while others are not, which may influence the type you choose. This is illustrated in the article ExacqVision Export Video File Types

Live Camera View Displays Gray or Black Areas

Why do these areas appear?

When displaying camera streams in Live mode in the ExacqVision Desktop Client you may notice gray or black “bars” to the side or above and below the image. This is due to conflicting display aspect ratios.

The Client software adapts the live camera viewing panel(s) to the video stream provided. It does this to prevent cropping the stream displayed, preventing you from seeing activity in the camera’s field of view.

Black will appear within the individual camera panels.

Gray will appear outside the camera panels filling in the display window area.

Conflicts may arise when:

  • Your cameras stream a different aspect ratio than your displaying monitor.
Example: Your monitor is 16×9 and the operating system is set to a resolution that matches a 16×9 aspect ratio, but your cameras are streaming 4×3 aspect streams.

• You are displaying multiple camera streams that have different aspect ratios.
Example: You are currently displaying three streams that are 4×3 and one that is 16×9.

• You are displaying one or more fisheye streams that are not dewarped. Fisheye streams that are not dewarped will always display circular with black regions filling the areas outside this circle since the live panel is rectangular.

NOTE: These should not be confused with camera Association toolbars which permit you to select the color and opacity of the background that appears under Association icons.

Client Settings

The ExacqVision Desktop Client software provides some controls on how you wish to adapt the Live display within each client instance.

Navigating to Configuration mode, using the gear icon from the top-left tool bar, then highlighting the Client node near the top of the navigation tree opens the Client settings page.

Under the Video Panels section is a drop-down selector for Panel Size. This will default to the Content setting.

  • Content – Each panel adapts to fit the stream assigned to it. The predominate stream aspect ratio “wins”. If three of the four streams displayed are 4×3 then the one 16×9 stream will be fit into the window using “bars” to make up the empty space inside the panel.
  • Window – Panels will resize based on the aspect ratio of the ExacqVision Client window. A free-floating window can be resized/reshaped as the user desires. As the aspect ratio changes the camera panels displaying “bars” will change to suit. A maximized Client window will cause the panels to respect the aspect ratio the operating system uses.
  • 16×9 – Forces all panels to remain in 16×9 aspect ratio regardless of the ratio of the Client window.
  • 4×3 – Forces all panels to remain in 4×3 aspect ratio regardless of the ratio of the Client window.

As mentioned above, the ExacqVision software adapts to prevent any one camera stream from being cropped to prevent a user from missing activity occurring in the camera’s field of view.

If this is problematic for the site/user, the best solution is installing and/or configuring all cameras for the same aspect ratio. Avoiding empty areas outside of the camera panels may also mean making sure that your display matches the necessary aspect ratio.
