Enable User Pick List via Fast User Switching

Overview

This Knowledgebase article will describe how to enable the user pick-list at the login screen after a boot/reboot of Windows based exacqVision systems.

The Problem

By default Windows based exacqVision systems will boot up to the login screen of the last known logged-in user with no way to change to a different user at that screen.  This behavior may not be desirable on systems with more than one Windows user.

The Solution

Enabling the fast user switching feature in Windows will cause the user pick-list to appear at the login screen after booting or rebooting the system.  By default fast user switching is disabled in the exacqVision Windows image, but it can be enabled with a registry edit.

Important Note

Enabling fast user switching will allow more than one user to be logged in at a time.  This should be carefully considered with respect to system resources and contending exacqVision client/server settings from other accounts left logged in and running.  Proper stewardship of user accounts would be highly encouraged.

To enable fast user switching, complete the following steps:

  1. Log in to the exacqVision system’s Administrator Windows OS account.  This would be the account that was created during the Windows Welcome at first boot, otherwise known as OOBE or Out Of Box Experience.
  2. Press the “Windows” key (between the Alt and Ctrl keys) or click the “Start” button in taskbar
  3. Type “regedit”, press Enter and accept the UAC prompt
  4. Navigate to “HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System”
  5. Double click on “HideFastUserSwitching”
  6. In the “Value data” field change the “1” to “0” and click OK
  7. Restart system

Results

  • When system displays the Windows login screen, a list of local OS accounts should be available in the lower left corner.
  • From the Start menu another user can log in while the current user remains logged in.  Please see the Important Note above
  • Any user will be able to shut the system down regardless of others’ logged-in status, running applications or open files.

Setting up Email Notifications to send a Start and a Stop email when the event starts and ends.

When setting up email notifications to work with a IP Camera Connection event there is setting in the Notifications to send on the event start and end.

Once the Email Profile has been tested and confirmed to be working we need to set up 2 rules for this to work properly

  1. Event Linking

To set up the trigger to allow the notification to work we must set up an Event linking event.
In this Example we are using a single camera to to send an email when the camera disconnects and reconnects to the server. The email profile will send out an email that will show the start of the event and the end of the event with a Start and End status in the email that is receive.

The event rule should be set similar to the picture above.

Event Type: IP Camera Connection
Event Source: Is the camera that you want to monitor.
Action Type: Notify (the Email Notifications)
Action Target: The Email Profile Created in the Notifications section. Alert Emails.

Notification Email Message Profiles

To configure your email profile Page correctly to send the notifications with a start and an end see the picture below.

When setting up the Email Message Profile Page there are 2 things we need to make sure are selected from the menu options.

1.Make sure to Select the WHEN drop down menu and select Alarm Starts and Ends. (If you want only on start select Alarm Start)
2. In the Add Field drop down menu select EVENT STATE and a Date format.

When the event is triggered the email profile will send an email out on the start of that event and then at the end of that event.
